Savannah, GA- This past weekend about a dozen Florida based racers headed up Interstate 95 to contest the Super-Prestige in Savannah. The fast course at the Oglethorpe Speedway featured a giant pinwheel and some stairs on the back side of the course. The Sunday course was a bit longer than on Saturday with some additional dirt jumps and whoops. In short, the race was really fast on both days and the Saturday course was a bit more technical than on Sunday.

The Florida racers performed well with the the likes of Todd Leedy (352 Racing) taking the win both days in the Masters 35+ Cat4 race and David Lavenhagen (352 Racing) taking the Cat4 win on Saturday. Lavenhagen was primed to take the win on Sunday, but an unfortunate date with the barriers brought his hopes of winning crashing down with just one lap to go. The other top performance for the weekend was a third place finish for Christian Ahrens (352 Racing) in the Single Speed race.’

The GeorgiaCX has a race review up. Here is what they had to say about Florida racers:

The Men’s 4 and Men’s 4 35+ categories were next to toe the line. When the dust had settled, David Lavenhagen (352 Racing) pulled off a convincing 1st…In the 35+ race, Todd Leedy (352 Racing) showed his domination by taking 1st…

In the last race of the day, Singlespeed action under lights (combined with relentless heckling by the Florida racing contingent) provided entertainment for all.

As you can see we made our presence known with quality results and memorable taunting.

The results for Florida based racers:

Florida Cyclocross Chatter Vol. 10

On November 1, 2012 by Super Rookie

Tropical Cyclocross!

Our racing season starts this weekend in Miami! Are you ready to rumble? Here is the race flyer. This year the gang is putting on two days of racing action, rather than just one. Last year the Tropical Cyclocross title went to mountain bike uber-pro Bob McCarty and all eyes will be on the long-haired wonder if he decides to show up once again.

The first race of the year offers a great chance to get some points for the FLCX Series standings and ensure a prize at the end of the season!

Velo Champ Sponsorship

Did you read the news about neutral support being provided by Velo Champ at select FLCX races this season? If you missed this piece of news read all about it.

Ocala Course Inspection

We went down to Ocala on Wednesday to take a look at a possible race course for an early December race on the weekend of the 1st. We will have more information for you about this race, but keep an eye out for another chance to race your bike. The long-term goal of the promoter is to get included on the FLCX Series Calendar for the 2013/14 season.

We love how much cyclocross is growing here in Florida!

Savannah Recap

We have a recap of Savannah all complete, we are just waiting for our northern neighbors to publish the results online so we can list how Florida riders finished.

Vélo Champ Partners With Select Florida Cyclocross Races To Provide Neutral Support

On October 31, 2012 by Super Rookie

TAMPA, FL- In an effort to further the colorful cyclocross community here in Florida, Vélo Champ Cycle Sport is pulling out all the stops for the 2012-13 CX season. Vélo Champ will be the official neutral race support sponsor for the Florida Cyclocross series, offering its program at select races throughout the season: Tally Cross, Tampa Riverfront CX, Tampa CX Classic, Swamp Cross, Winter Garden Cross and Clermont Cross.

As the Florida cyclocross community continues to grow, it is clear that the added benefit of neutral race support throughout the season would provide an ideal venue for amateurs, pros and spectators alike to have an enjoyable and engaging race experience. This will include a selection of demo cyclocross bikes, a sponsored loaner/pit wheel and inner-tube inventory, a comprehensive CX tire inventory, CX/mountain pedals and spare parts to address most race-specific issues.

In addition to neutral race support, Vélo Champ will continue its tradition of hosting killer parties as it joins forces with the Florida Cyclocross Series this year: The Trash Crit & CX Party will take place Saturday, Nov. 24, at Vélo Champ (6112 N Central Ave., Tampa, FL, 33604). Along with a midseason CX party at the shop (think beer and wafels), the evening will include the Trash Crit circuit race through the back alleys of Old Seminole Heights — a 1.25-mile circuit course of unpaved alleys, trash, bum huddles, old tires, downed trees, cobbles and puddles. This evening of beer, food and racing takes place between Tampa’s Riverfront CX race and the Tampa CX Classic at Picnic Island.

Vélo Champ was born out of a love for fringe cycling disciplines just like cyclocross, and it has quickly grown in the past three years to embrace the sport unlike any other shop in the Florida market. Vélo Champ is proud to partner with the Florida Cyclocross Series as excitement for the sport continues to spread.

Here’s a gif of Lap 1, turn 1 for the Cat3’s. It might take a bit to load if you have a slow internet connection like I do.

Florida Cyclocross Chatter Vol. 9

Savannah Super-Prestige

A bunch of Floridians are heading up to Savannah this weekend for their annual Savannah Super Prestige Weekend. This is the largest race in our region with fields routinely over the average in Florida. It is a great tuneup for the FLCX season that starts the following weekend in Miami.

Read our preview!

Staches For Cross Awareness

Yes, cyclocross is all the rage. Mustaches are also all the rage. How about we combine the two? Well, some folks in Florida have decided to grow some mustaches for cyclocross season. This allows you to tell the world all about your love of the greatest sport on two wheels. Get on it, folks. Show off the lip rug.

Upgrades. Upgrades. Upgrades.

You are only allowed to race in the category/age listed on your USA Cycling licence. So, if you want to upgrade you need to submit it via your USA Cycling account. When submitting the upgrade make sure to list the date, field, field size and result in your request. To figure out your points, or to learn more about the upgrade process read the USA Cycling upgrade guide.

Last week of JAX.

The last week of cyclocross racing in Jacksonville is this Thursday evening at Boone Park at 6:40. Fields have been hovering around 40 racers and the promoters are hoping to have an FLCX race next season in the Jacksonville area. If you have haven’t gotten to a race make notes to visit next season.

Seems like a few people are banding together to keep the scourge of pinwheels in cyclocross out of Florida. You know those stupid things that are the sign of a lazy course designer. Takes up a lot of space and are really confusing? Well, now there is a Facebook page for you if you share those feelings.

Powers World Cup

If you live outside of Miami you already know about Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) getting a seventh at the first round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup. This has moved him into 10th place in the world in UCI points. His stated goal is a front row start position and this appears in reach as one rider (Stybar) ranked above him has already stated that they will not be in Louisville this February. If you live in Miami you are just finding out about this news now and we have a video for you:

Savannah Super-Prestige Preview

On October 24, 2012 by Super Rookie

Yes, we know that Savannah isn’t in Florida.

However, it is really close and a lot of Floridians are heading north to get in two days of racing action prior to the FLCX season opener in Miami on the 2nd and 3rd of November. So, if you plan on racing study up. If you plan on staying home and hanging out with your hobby shop friends at a Helicopter Fly-In than you can read this and try to live vicariously through us.

This is a top notch race. You don’t want to miss it.

GeorgiaCX: A Primer

The Georgia Cyclocross scene is a little further along than ours. The series has a functioning website at georgiacx.com that is full information. The series also has a lot more racers than ours with attendance averaging above 175 racers per event. The races are structured a little bit differently with more category options to help facilitate the larger number of participants.

The folks in Georgia also have a set payout structure for the cat1/2 race with payout on a sliding scale dependent on participants. It should also be noted that the Single Speed race in Georgia is specific in stating that racers can not have a deraileur on their bike!

They claim to be the “premier series” in the Southeast, so we have now set the goal to prove them wrong here in the Sunshine State.

GeorgiaCX: Racers

The racers in Georgia seem to have a lot in common with those in Florida. A quick venture over to crossresults.com shows a bunch of racers of different quality, just a lot more of them. The fastest of them all is Thomas Turner (Jamis). He was able to get second at Masters Worlds last season in Louisville and he seems to be on track this season with three wins in three tries. So, yeah, get on that guys wheel.

Savannah Super-Prestige Saturday Preview

The race takes place at the Oglethorpe Speedway on the outskirts of Savannah. The course is centered around the dirt racing track and it features a long start onto the backstretch which leads into a spiral. We here in Florida feel this is lame, but we are guests and we keep our mouths shut when in a guests house. After the exit from the spiral you hit some barriers and then a bunch of off camber stuff before leading into a long stretch into the main feature of the Savannah race, THE FLYOVER!

Not the Savannah Flyover. (Photo: Brady Prenzlow via MNCX.org)

The flyover is basically some scaffolding with plywood. It is cool, but have you seen this? Yeah, Florida 1, Georgia 0. After the flyover you hit up the coolest section of the course which features a cool little run-up of three steps prior to hitting up the last section that leads into the pinwheel. It is a great course and the size of the fields ensure some great racing action, regardless of your skill level.

Savannah Super-Prestige Sunday Preview

It is pretty much the same as Saturday, but they add a woods section which is a little bit more technical. Ah, just take a look at the drawing below!

Race map. Featuring spiral of lameness. (Photo: Savannah Super Prestige)

Get there early. Pre-ride the course. Take advantage of the beer stand in the grandstand. Have a lot of fun. Repeat on Sunday. This is the biggest race within driving distance of Florida. Why would you miss this? Unless it is to improve your #crosscopter skills you should make your way up Interstate 95.

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Semi-Final Pre-Season Rankings

On October 23, 2012 by Super Rookie

A good book takes a little while to understand. You have to read it twice to really get a grasp on things. The Power Rankings are no different and with the first race of the season in the books we have another chance to see how things stand before the start of the FLCX season in Miami in two weeks. The upcoming race weekend in Savannah will also provide a glimpse into seeing who is hot and who is not. Then, and only then can we determine who’s on top of the heap for the beginning of the year.

Let’s take a look at where things stand two weeks before the FLCX Series opener:

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Pre-Season Pt. 2

1. Josh Thornton (Dunedin Cyclery) | Cat1/2 | Last Week: #3

  • When you lap everyone except for the #2 on the power rankings you deserve the top spot.
  • A win is a win. Lakeland is a small race, but Thornton turned the result immediately into success at the Downeast CX in Maine

2. Jack Rich (Infinity Bike Shop) | 35+ | Last Week #1

  • A victim of circumstance. The only reason Rich falls a spot is because Thornton showed up to Lakeland.
  • Stellar performance in Lakeland shows that Rich is the man to beat in the 35+ this season. And he got a new bike for this year.

3. Chris Slack (Infinity Bike Shop) | Cat1/2 | Last Week #2

  • Slack was a no show at Lakeland, but rumor has it that he lost 5lbs off of his 120lb weight.
  • That has to count for something, right?
  • He actually upgraded to category 2!

4. Zach Fout (Gearlink) | Cat1/2 | Last Week #UR

  • Where the heck did this guy come from?
  • Already upgraded to cat1/2 and finished with a strong 3rd at Lakeland.
  • Just welcomed a new child into the world, so who knows how often he will be able to come play.
5. Ben Smith (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More) | 35+ | Last Week #UR
  • Crushing dreams in Seattle for the first few races this season.
  • Best hope for taking Jack Rich down a step this season?

6. Taylor Norton (Orange State Cycling) | Cat3 and Single Speed | Last Week #9

  • Don’t understand how you can move up without racing? We don’t either.
  • On a mission to bring the pain to the front of the field, and to lap the back of the field with impunity
  • Taylor is now the man to beat in the cat3s, unless Greg Buker (FSU) still hasn’t upgraded.

7. Zoe Mullins (Colavita) | Women 1/2/3 | Last Week #4

  • Didn’t race at Lakeland + Training with John-Paul = Drop in the rankings.
8. Todd Frobish (U/A) | Cat4 | Last Week #UR
  • While in the process of winning easily in Lakeland the whispers started.
  • What were they saying?
9. Chase Tennyson (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More ) |Cat3 | Last Week #UR
  • Took a strong second place to Zach Fout in the cat3s at Lakeland.
  • A podium in the cat3 FLCX Series seems to be in the making for Tennyson in 2012/13.

10. Tony Timonere (Top Gear Cyclces) | 35+ | Last Week #UR

  • First race of the season and Timonere scores a strong fourth place.
  • Just think if he actually knew what he was doing out there!

Falling Off: Dario Perez (Miami Velo), Steve Noble (Infinity Bike Shop), Jackson Mehr (U/A), Keith Richards (352 Racing), John Hovius (Orlando Road Club), Brook Rich (Infinity Bike Shop)

Florida Cyclocross Chatter Vol. 8

On October 18, 2012 by Super Rookie

We are only two and a half weeks out from the Florida Cyclocross kick-off race in Miami. Here is a heaping of fresh cyclocross news to keep you in the loop.

Jacksonville Training Race Series Continues

The race series in Jacksonville continues this week and through the rest of the month on Thursday nights. Race time is 6:40pm and it is located in Boone Park in the Five Points neighborhood. The series has been a roaring success for the past three years and the promoter is hoping to turn the series into an FLCX Series Race next season. Make sure you bring your light as the final laps are in the dark!

Tally Cross and Swamp Cross Flyers Posted

You may have seen our recent post announcing the flyers of Tally Cross and Swamp Cross being approved by USA Cycling. They go in the books with Tropical Cyclocross as having all of the information announced and available. USA Cycling is also reporting that the Riverfront CX race in Tampa is also in the process of permitting.

Savannah Super Prestige Cyclocross Weekend

One of the biggest races in the region right around the corner up in Savannah, Georgia. The Super Prestige race is now entering its fourth year and it continues to bring in races across the area. We have been hearing from many Floridian racers that are planning on making the trip. This race provides an opportunity to race with large fields and to get in a final tune-up before the following weekends FLCX season opener in Miami at Tropical Cyclocross.

The race information for Savannah can be found here.

Lakeland Shorttrack Cyclocross Throwdown Results Posted

Head to our results page to see the results of last weekends mudfest in Lakeland.

Ocala Cyclocross Race In The Works?

While in Lakeland this past weekend we chatted with some folks interested in putting on a cyclocross race in Ocala this December. Keep an eye on FLCX.org to get more information about this race. The target date will be Saturday, December 1st. The promoters are hoping to get their feet wet before going all in for a race next season. For those that are curious Ocala is about 45minutes south of Gainesville on Interstate 75.

Select FLCX Series Races To Feature Neutral Support

We will soon be making an announcement about a local shop providing top notch neutral support at select races across the state. Stay tuned to FLCX.ORG to see how a local business is going to make your race day worry free!

Louisville Worlds Tickets/Course/Announcements

The World Championships in Louisville have announced their tickets for the weekend of racing. Tickets cost $40 and are available here. Many Florida racers are heading to Louisville and plan on staying at the Hyatt Regency Downtown in Louisville. Also of interest was this tweet from the Louisville organizers recognizing Florida Cyclocross:

Graham Partain showed up to the Lakeland CX race and filmed it…the helicopter only lasted a little while before it fell to the earth faster than Felix Baumgartner. However, he was able to make this video. Feel free to share it with the world and get more racers out to FLCX events!
