2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Weekend #3

On November 21, 2012 by Super Rookie

In FLCX Power Rankings one day you are in, and the next you are out. Unless you are Jack Rich, who I find really, really, really hot right now. -Heidi Klum

The Florida cyclocross world is a tough one.

On any given weekend a bunch of fast people can show and rip your legs off only to never be seen or heard of again. This is often the case at the outlying races on the FLCX calendar. Every year it is a given that Tallahassee will bring out a few fast racers that sleep in hibernation for an entire year only to destroy all comers in routine fashion. For example, Graham Gillis (Gulf Coast Velo) did his usual domination of the cx3 field on Saturday for the second straight year only to take the leap into the 1/2 race on Sunday to be destroyed (ed. how does it feel, Graham?) by the big guns of Florida racing. In short, your time at the top can’t last forever.

Think of the Power Rankings as a pound-for-pound list of the best cyclocross racers in Florida. If all things were equal who would win a race between the racers. As you can imagine this is a very difficult thing to figure out and that is why we have retained a mathematical expert to create a super-scientific formula to help us determine who is the best cyclocross racer in Florida. Here is how it is tabulated:

  • Performance relative to category 41%
  • Consistency  34%
  • How pro does the rider look 17%
  • Jerk Quotient* 12%
*The Jerk Quotient is a formula that is hard to explain without getting out a cocktail napkin. Basically, if the person forgets that bike racing is fun and you are wearing spandex while you ride around in circles you will have low scores in this field which can make or break your final ranking.

While consistency is a large component of the rankings formula it doesn’t help if you don’t show up. The seven individuals that fell of the list this week are examples of this. Five of them didn’t race at all and two (Ryan Fisher and Jason Guillen) didn’t “show up” and put in performances that left many wanting.

On to the rankings!

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Weekend #3

1. Jack Rich (Infinity Bike Shop) | 35+ | Last Week: #1

  • Two wins in the 35+ field in Tally.
  • Consistently near the top despite being old enough to be the father of 98% of his competitors.
  • Our first repeat on the top step and it might be short lived.
  • Very close to dropping a spot after a miserable DNF in the Saturday Single Speed race.

2. Eric Stubbs (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More) | cat1/2 | Last Week: UR

  • Two huge wins in Tally against large and competitive fields.
  • In the driver’s seat for taking over the top spot after Tampa weekend.
  • First appearance in Florida this year for Stubbs. If he keeps showing he should be near the top.
  • Failed to buy Power Rankings editor a drink on Saturday night. This hurts Jerk Quotient score.

3. Chris Slack (Infinity Bike Shop) | cat1/2 | Last Week: #3

  • Three straight weeks at number three for the 2011/12 FLCX Series winner.
  • Currently in first overall in the 1/2 series.
  • Another predictable performance. Saturday=Pathetic. Sunday=Fantastic.
  • Big test in Tampa this weekend. Can Slack hang with the big guns?

4. Ben Wilson (Super Cool Bike Shop) | Cat4, Cat3, SS | Last Week: UR

  • Where did this guy and his muscles come from?
  • A win on Saturday in the cat4s. A solid second on Sunday in the cat3s and Single Speed.
  • Racing on mountain bike may be a detriment on some courses.
  • Seriously, have you seen the muscles on this guy?

5. Chase Tennyson (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More) | cat3 | Last Week: UR

  • A strong return to the power rankings after a dominating cat3 win on Sunday.
  • A steady workmanlike performance on Saturday against a stacked cat3 field.

6. Martin Cox (Super Cool Bike Shop) | Cat1/2, SS | Last Week: UR

  • Former state cyclocross champion makes a triumphant return in Tally.
  • Four races. Two podiums. One win in Single Speed on Sunday.
  • Raced mountain bike on Sunday when he had cross bike on Saturday. Major faux-pas.

7. Regan Woodall (Top Gear Cycles) | Cat1/2, SS | Last Week: UR

  • No, not that Woodall.
  • Dominate win in the Single Speed race on Saturday.
  • Two quality races in the 1/2s in first cross race weekend ever.

8. Jody Alexander (Top Gear Cycles) | W4 | Last Week: UR

  • Competitive performance against her male counterparts.
  • Like GI Joe said, “showing up is half the battle.”
  • Scored valuable points for Maverick and Goose’s Bike Shop.

9. Christian Ahrens (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More) | SS | Last Week: 7

  • A knee injury can’t keep Ahrens from fighting for every point in his quest for the Single Speed overall.
  • His teammate, Keith Richards, is doing all he can to keep that quest from happening.
  • A third and a fourth against some mountain bike ringers.
  • Preparing for a run at the SESSCXC as he has an actual single speed cyclocross bike.

10. Jeff Zipperer (Infinity Bike Shop) | 45+, Cat4 | Last Week: UR

  • Firefighter.
  • Wheelie professional.
  • Two seconds in 45+ keep him atop the point standings.
  • Offers beer hand-ups to Power Rankings editor.

Falling Off: Ryan Fisher (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More), Calixto Manuel (Team Velocity), Rich Weinstock (Van Dessel), Laura Parsons (Rose Bandit), Todd Frobish (Brick City Bicycles), Keith Lawler (Miami Velo), Jason Guillen (GearLink)

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Weekend #2

On November 14, 2012 by Super Rookie

The FLCX season started in earnest two weeks ago in Miami with two days of racing. The two very different courses allowed for a few people to shine and for the power ranking editors to go bonkers adding news names into the mix. This week we bid a fond farewell to longtime top spot resident, Josh Thornton (Dunedin Cyclery), and welcome a new name to the top three. There was also a bit of stagnation and a few surprises.

Without further ado, here are your current and official FLCX Power Rankings heading into the second weekend of racing in Tallahassee!

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Weekend #2

1. Jack Rich (Infinity Bike Shop) | 35+ | Last Week: #2

  • Dominated the 35+ field in Miami.
  • Closest competitor was minutes down on both days.
  • Second place both days as he pushed the eventual winners non-stop.

2. Ryan Fisher (352 Racing) | Cat3, SS | Last Week #6

  • Wins twice on Saturday in dominating fashion in both the Cat3s and Single Speed.
  • Had a two minute gap on Sunday in the cat3s with one lap to go before a flat tire ruined his chances for a three-peat.
  • Goes much faster in the SingleSpeed class since he isn’t carrying the giant bags of sand that he has strapped on in the cat3s.

3. Chris Slack (Infinity Bike Shop) | Cat1/2 | Last Week #3

  • Won on Saturday.
  • Lost horribly on Sunday.
  • Can he put together a good weekend, or is this going to be the norm for the Slackmeister?

4. Calixto Manuel (Team Velocity) | Cat1/2 | Last Week #UR

  • Who is this guy?
  • Shows up to the start line 10minutes before the start and looks pro.
  • Delivered a powerful performance on Sunday and a strong third place on Saturday.
  • If he shows up to more races than there could be a new king of cross in Florida.
  • Rumor has it that he is a doorman at the swankiest club on South Beach. Could this affect his training?
5. Rich Weinstock (Van Dessel Factory) | 45+ | Last Week #UR
  • Easy wins both days in the 45+
  • Looks pro, but is actually pretty nice.

6. Laura Parsons (Rose Bandits) | W1/2/3 | Last Week #UR

  • Top performing lady in Miami over two days.
  • Had a strong support network of mustachioed teammates, but they seemed too hesitant to race.
  • If she shows to other races she should give Brooke Rich a run for the money on the overall.

7. Christian Ahrens (352 Racing) | Cat1/2, SS | Last Week #10

  • Locked in on going for the Single Speed overall title in 2012/13.
  • A win and a strong second place make him well on the way.
  • Can he keep it up?
  • #TWSS
8. Todd Frobish (Brick City Bicycles) | Cat4 | Last Week #8
  • He didn’t race in Miami.
  • Plans on crushing souls in the cat4s this weekend in Tallahassee.
9. Keith Lawler (Miami Velo) |35+ | Last Week #UR
  • The only competitor to Jack Rich in the 35+ field.
  • We use the term “competitor” liberally.
  • Can’t get enough Lawler? Follow his explosive twitter account: @yeslawler

10. Jason Guillen (Gearlink) | Cat 1/2 & SS | Last Week #5

  • Falls from fifth in last week’s rankings.
  • Was in a battle for 3rd on Saturday and Sunday
  • Dusted off the single speed on Sunday for a strong second place.

Falling Off: David Lavenhagen (352 Racing), Josh Thornton (Dunedin Cyclery), Zach Fout (Gearlink), Chase Tennyson (352 Racing).

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Final Pre-Season Rankings

On November 2, 2012 by Super Rookie

The FLCX season is finally here with this weekends racing in Miami at Tropical Cyclocross. With only a handful of racers heading north to Savannah over the past weekend we have not seen much movement on the Power Rankings heading into the first race of the year. In fact, the only changes are the re-emergence of Jason Guillen (Gear Link) and the appearance of Ryan Fisher, David Lavenhagen and Christian Ahrens, both of 352 Racing.

Falling off the list this week are Taylor Norton (Orange State Cycling), Ben Smith (352 Racing) Zoe Mullins (Colavita) and Tony Timonere (Top Gear Cycles). Norton struggled to get a quality holeshot both days in Savannah and wallowed in the pack of the category 3s, despite putting together a quality performance in the Single Speed race it wasn’t enough to save the bearded one from falling off the list. Smith is a victim of circumstance. A medical issue is keeping Smith from racing in the coming weeks and off the bike for the time being, but be assured that when the issues clears up he will be near the top of the rankings in less than a week. Timonere and Mullins did not race this past weekend in Savannah.

Once again Miami fails to make the list as their cyclocross readiness has not been viewed by the editors of FLCX.

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Final Pre-Season

1. Josh Thornton (Dunedin Cyclery) | Cat1/2 | Last Week: #1

  • The top spot for one more week. However, without racing in Florida a catastrophic free fall is expected.
  • Making Felix Baumgartner Proud.

2. Jack Rich (Infinity Bike Shop) | 35+ | Last Week #2

  • The top place on the rankings is getting awfully close with the expected absence of Thornton in Miami.

3. Chris Slack (Infinity Bike Shop) | Cat1/2 | Last Week #3

  • Pros: No longer sick. Really fast. Nice guy.
  • Cons: Not Jack Rich. Not Josh Thornton.

4. Zach Fout (Gearlink) | Cat1/2 | Last Week #4

  • Will he show up to Miami?
  • We doubt it since he has a newborn at home, but he still is a racer to watch!
5. Jason Guillen (Gear Link) | Cat 1/2 | Last Week #UR
  • The performance at Lakeland must have been a fluke as Guillen pulled the best Florida performance in Savannah in the 1/2s.
  • Apparently if the course doesn’t feature a giant pit of mud Guillen is among the fastest in the state on a cross bike.

6. Ryan Fisher (352 Racing) | Cat3 | Last Week #UR

  • The bearded one is looking good for a strong run to the cat3 title this season.
  • Strong performances both days, and a quality teammate move to bring the toothless Lavenhagen to the dentist gained extra points.

7. Dave Lavenhagen (352 Racing) | Cat4 | Last Week #UR

  • Convincing solo win in Savannah in spite of the 50 pound sacks of sand in his pocket on Saturday
  • Diabolical Hater
  • Crashed into the barriers and lost teeth while leading on Sunday. NTSB ruled crash not due dangerous overloading of sand sacks.
  • Will win and hopefully upgrade once he can eat solid food again
8. Todd Frobish (Brick City Bicycles) | Cat4 | Last Week #8
  • While you were busy training, Frobish was investigating the possibility of putting on a cyclocross race in Ocala this December.
  • Still the resident #CAPTAINSANDBAG
9. Chase Tennyson (352 Racing) |Cat3 | Last Week #9
  • Took a strong second place to Zach Fout in the cat3s at Lakeland.
  • A podium in the cat3 FLCX Series seems to be in the making for Tennyson in 2012/13.

10. Christian Ahrens (352 Racing) | Cat 3 & SS | Last Week #UR

  • His performance in the Cat3s was forgettable and reinforces his idea to not upgrade to cat2.
  • The single speed race however is easily his domain and Ahrens will stop nothing short of victory.

Falling Off: Ben Smith (352 Racing), Taylor Norton (Orange State Cycling), Tony Timonere (Top Gear Cycles) Zoe Mullins (Colavita, CuteBassetHounds.com)

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Semi-Final Pre-Season Rankings

On October 23, 2012 by Super Rookie

A good book takes a little while to understand. You have to read it twice to really get a grasp on things. The Power Rankings are no different and with the first race of the season in the books we have another chance to see how things stand before the start of the FLCX season in Miami in two weeks. The upcoming race weekend in Savannah will also provide a glimpse into seeing who is hot and who is not. Then, and only then can we determine who’s on top of the heap for the beginning of the year.

Let’s take a look at where things stand two weeks before the FLCX Series opener:

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Pre-Season Pt. 2

1. Josh Thornton (Dunedin Cyclery) | Cat1/2 | Last Week: #3

  • When you lap everyone except for the #2 on the power rankings you deserve the top spot.
  • A win is a win. Lakeland is a small race, but Thornton turned the result immediately into success at the Downeast CX in Maine

2. Jack Rich (Infinity Bike Shop) | 35+ | Last Week #1

  • A victim of circumstance. The only reason Rich falls a spot is because Thornton showed up to Lakeland.
  • Stellar performance in Lakeland shows that Rich is the man to beat in the 35+ this season. And he got a new bike for this year.

3. Chris Slack (Infinity Bike Shop) | Cat1/2 | Last Week #2

  • Slack was a no show at Lakeland, but rumor has it that he lost 5lbs off of his 120lb weight.
  • That has to count for something, right?
  • He actually upgraded to category 2!

4. Zach Fout (Gearlink) | Cat1/2 | Last Week #UR

  • Where the heck did this guy come from?
  • Already upgraded to cat1/2 and finished with a strong 3rd at Lakeland.
  • Just welcomed a new child into the world, so who knows how often he will be able to come play.
5. Ben Smith (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More) | 35+ | Last Week #UR
  • Crushing dreams in Seattle for the first few races this season.
  • Best hope for taking Jack Rich down a step this season?

6. Taylor Norton (Orange State Cycling) | Cat3 and Single Speed | Last Week #9

  • Don’t understand how you can move up without racing? We don’t either.
  • On a mission to bring the pain to the front of the field, and to lap the back of the field with impunity
  • Taylor is now the man to beat in the cat3s, unless Greg Buker (FSU) still hasn’t upgraded.

7. Zoe Mullins (Colavita) | Women 1/2/3 | Last Week #4

  • Didn’t race at Lakeland + Training with John-Paul = Drop in the rankings.
8. Todd Frobish (U/A) | Cat4 | Last Week #UR
  • While in the process of winning easily in Lakeland the whispers started.
  • What were they saying?
9. Chase Tennyson (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More ) |Cat3 | Last Week #UR
  • Took a strong second place to Zach Fout in the cat3s at Lakeland.
  • A podium in the cat3 FLCX Series seems to be in the making for Tennyson in 2012/13.

10. Tony Timonere (Top Gear Cyclces) | 35+ | Last Week #UR

  • First race of the season and Timonere scores a strong fourth place.
  • Just think if he actually knew what he was doing out there!

Falling Off: Dario Perez (Miami Velo), Steve Noble (Infinity Bike Shop), Jackson Mehr (U/A), Keith Richards (352 Racing), John Hovius (Orlando Road Club), Brook Rich (Infinity Bike Shop)

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Pre-season

On October 10, 2012 by Super Rookie

Be honest.

You have often wondered who the strongest racer in Florida Cyclocross is regardless of category. Okay, you probably haven’t wondered about this, but just in case you have, we have gone ahead and done the work for you. Think of it as a gift, or even better, an unofficial pound for pound ranking of FLCX racers. Naturally, these rankings should be taken 100% seriously.

How are the power rankings created? A few of us go into the lab (Subaru Outback) and we look at all the statistics. We then argue for about 45minutes trying to figure out who deserves to be mentioned and where they should rank. Then we come up with a few snarky comments about the racers skills and personality. A very scientific process:

Proof of the science used to determine power rankings. (Photo: Tim Hayes)

Don’t see your name on the rankings? Well, you have some work to do.

2012/13 FLCX Power Rankings: Pre-Season

1. Jack Rich (Infinity Bike Shop) | 35+

  • Regardless of category Jack Rich was the most dominate rider in Florida Cyclocross during the 2011/12 season.
  • Can he continue his domination in the increasingly competitive 35+ field?

2. Chris Slack (Infinity Bike Shop) | Cat1/2

  • Slack Bagger is fast and consistent.
  • The favorite for the cat1/2 overall title this season.
  • Rumor has it that he still hasn’t put in for his upgrade from cat3. Seriously. What a bag of sand this guy is.
  • UPDATE: We have received word from Chris Slack that his request has been approved. Good work, big guy.

3. Josh Thorton (St. Pete Bike and Fitness) | Cat1/2

  • Defending Florida State Champion.
  • Has had a good start on the National Calendar despite starting races near the back row. May not enter many Florida races, but deserves a mention for flying our flag proudly on the National Circuit.

4. Zoe Mullins (Colavita) | Women 1/2/3

  • Zoe ran away with the Women4 title last season. With the upgrade to cat3 she should be considered a favorite for the series win.
  • Um, what else is there to say about Zoe?

5. Dario Perez (Miami Velo) | 45+ and Single Speed

  • If Dario is able to show up to race he will more than likely win the 45+ category and place in the Single Speeds.
  • Heckling tip? Lawyer jokes.

6. Steve Noble (Infinity Bike Shop) | 45+/55+/Single Speed

  • Old enough to be your grandpa. Fast enough to destroy you.
  • Drives all over the state to score points, and from time to time gets in the money when enters the 1/2 field.

7. Jackson Mehr (U/A) | Junior 10-14

  • Winner of the ultra-competitive Junior 10-14 category in 2011/12.
  • Will his parents continue to drive him all over the state? We hope so.

8. Keith Richards (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More) | Cat1/2

  • Fastest racer over the barriers in Florida.
  • Your mom has had a crush on this man for years.

9. Taylor Norton (Orange State Cycling) | Cat3 and Single Speed

  • Lots of pressure on Taylor to fill the void left by Pete Young’s departure to Tennessee.
  • FLCX asks the Magic 8-Ball,  “Can Taylor finish a race without a mechanical?” Magic 8-Ball responds, “Who is Taylor Norton?”

10.(tie) John Hovius (Orlando Road Club) | Everything

  • This man is a beast.
  • If you don’t know who John Hovius is just look for the guy that enters every race on race day.
  • John is responsible for bringing several of our junior racers into the fold through his triathlon connections.

10*.(tie) Brooke Rich (Infinity Bike Shop, Destroyer of Souls) | Women 1,2

  • Brooke not only won her category almost every time she raced last year, despite coming off an injury, she usually beat everyone in the rest of the categories in her wave.
  • After Brooke won her category, she would feed her husband while he was racing, as well as chase her adorable toddler around.
  • In a training race, she let me ride away from her, then bridged back up to me, then heckled me ruthlessly, and then dropped me. Hard.
  • She is one of the most cheerful people in FLCX, which somehow makes the ass-kickings she hands out even worse.

Other Notables: JP* (Colavita), Ben Smith (352 Racing p/b Bikes and More)
*Added by Christian.
