Lakeland CX: Thorton Destroys Everyone In Mud Filled Bonanza

On October 13, 2012 by Super Rookie

LAKELAND, FL- This Saturday the Florida Cyclocross season started with a bang at the Lakeland Short Track Cyclocross Throwdown. In a city known for the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright another type of beauty greeted the racers at the Common Ground Park. It had been rumored that there was going to be mud at the venue, but little did racers know what promoter Jason Bergwall had in mind:

The mud pit before the race. (Photo: Jason Bergwell)

Bergwall must have thought it would be a great idea to serve up 30yards of thick peanut-butter mud for racers to slog through, and they were not angry. In fact, many thought it to the best part of the tight .6 mile course. The rest of the course was mostly run on an open field with a few off-camber sections and tight technical sections. The course also had three barriers on the course in a pair and a solo prior to the slop. (more…)

With racing starting up on Saturday you will probably want to hang out with the cool kids, so read up and act relevant.

Lakeland USAC Racing

USA Cycling racing action starts this weekend in Lakeland. Racing starts at 8:30am and registration begins at 7:30am. This will be a great opportunity to remove those cobwebs and get ready for the racing season. Plus, we want to see your smiling faces.

Here is the schedule as detailed in the above linked flyer (note the  wave structure is different from other FLCX races):

  • 7:30am Registration Opens
  • 8:30am Junior 10-14 / 20min
  • 9:00am Men/Women Cat4/5 and Junior 15-18 / 30min
  • 9:45am Men/Women Cat1/2/3 / 45min
See you out there!

Jacksonville Training

The third week of racing in Jacksonville continues this evening (Thursday) at Boone Park at 6:40pm. This is a USA Cycling sanctioned training event. The first two weeks of racing have seen fields of 45 and 35 racers. The course also features a fair amount of mud and a turnout of various skill levels. A great race for beginners and experts to hone their skills for the upcoming season.

Winter Garden Training

Jason Guillen (GearLink) is hosting another training race/evening at the Winter Garden venue this evening (Thursday). More information can be found here.

Permits In The Pipeline

A quick perusal of the USA Cycling page for cyclocross events in Florida shows that Swamp Cross and Tally Cross have filed for their permits and started the process to have their flyers posted. They will soon join Tropical Cyclocross in Miami as permitted USA Cycling events on the FLCX calendar. We have spoken to many promoters across the state and the process is moving along to getting the information for races up as soon as possible. Keep checking our schedule page, or our friends over at myfrca.org for the latest info on race permitting!

UCI Cyclocross World Championships

Tickets for the UCI World Championships go on sale today (Thursday). $40 for the weekend. Promoters are expecting upwards of 25,000 cyclocross fanaticos in attendance. Are you going to be there?

Several Floridians plan on making the trip to Louisville and the Downtown Hyatt Regency is the hotel of choice.

Quad Copter

Graham Partain (352 Racing) isn’t just busy getting on the podium in 35+ races. He is also learning how to fly a model helicopter. Why does this matter to Florida Cyclocross fans? Because it is mounted with a GoPro camera. This is the first time in national cyclocross that someone has taken filming to such an absurd level. See his new video below:

Cross Bike Sales Rising

We have been hearing from shop owners across the state that cyclocross bikes are moving out the door. This is great news as the more people with cyclocross bike the less we have to hear, “I can’t race because I don’t own a cross bike.” We are hoping for a large increase in racers this year across the state in cyclocross and the rising bike sales seem to suggest we are getting there.

An example of the increase in sales comes from Velo Champ  down in Tampa. They posted on their Twitter account the following message:

If you, or your shop, has seen an increase in sales hit us up on email info@flcx.org or copy us on twitter at @flcxorg to let us know!

Little Everglades = Wonderland

Dan Millstead, promoter of the Florida State Cyclocross Championships, has been hard at work creating a new flyover for us in January.* Here is a picture:

What? That can’t be real! (Photo: Dan Millstead)

*Just kidding. This is a new obstacle for the Savage Run held on the grounds of the Little Everglades Ranch on October 20th!

35+ Category Preview: Rich Is Man To Beat.

On October 8, 2012 by Super Rookie

Damn. Those old guys are fast.

The Masters 35+ field is among the most competitive across the board in Florida Cyclocross. While one racer was able to walk away with the overall series title last season, there were quite a few competitors who showed up and had to fight tooth and nail for their spot on the podium. Often the 35+ category racers find themselves in the hunt for the overall win in the 60 minute “A” race as they are coupled with the Category 1/2s. In short, these guys are among the fastest in the state.

Domination.

That is how one can best describe the 2011/12 FLCX Season of Jack Rich (Infinity Bike Shop). In ten starts last season Rich took the top step seven times. These victories were often by a margin of one minute or more over the second place finisher and he also found himself in the hunt for the overall race podium with the 1/2s on several occasions. To further illustrate his domination, Rich was able to forgo the last race of the season and compete as a cat1/2 to help his teammate Chris Slack (Infinity) secure the cat1/2 FLCX Series Championship.

Jack Rich takes a bottle on his way to victory in the 35+ last year in Orlando. (Photo: Michelle Blake)

Will Timonere Show?

Only one racer was able to top Rich more than once last season and that was Tony Timonere (Top Gear Bicycles). A fixture on the mountain bike scene where he often places among the top in solo competitions, as well as, in co-ed events with his partner, Tracey Wallace (Top Gear Bicycles). Timonere was able to beat Rich at Kelby CX in Tampa and on the second day of Swamp Cross in Gainesville. Timonere opted to go for the State Championships in the cat3s last season and came up just short with a second place finish. This totals up to three races entered and two firsts and a second for the effort.

Timonere has been on Twitter and Facebook discussing his desire to do more races this upcoming season, and if this is the case we may see a real tight battle for the 35+ series title in 2012/13.

352 Racing Sandwich.

Week in and week out two of the most consistent racers in the 35+ category were Ben Smith and Graham Partain of 352 Racing. Smith capitalized on absences of Rich to take wins twice last season on Day 2 of Tally Cross and the season finale in Orlando. Both wins showed the speed and capability of Smith, a former NORBA National Mountain Bike Pro, who returned to racing last year after almost 10 years off the bike. While Smith was able to taste victory in 2011/12, Partain managed to deploy his diesel engine to feature on several occasions and was often times biting at the heels of Smith. If the 352 Racing Old Timers are able to keep it up for this season we could see a real challenge to Rich’s superiority in the 35+ category.

Will the final podium shuffle in 2012/13? (Photo: Michelle Blake)

Atkins and Company

The efforts of Scott Atkins (Gearlink) should not go unnoticed. Just a year shy of entering the 45+ Category, Atkins managed to pull of a strong 4th place finish in the series last season, just 10pts shy of the podium. A fixture at almost every race last season Atkins will be a huge contributor for Gearlink in the team trophy competition.

You may notice that Jack Rich lost three times in 2011/12. Timonere beat him twice, but who managed to top Rich at the State Championships? Kevin Hofmann (unattached) was the man and he is very well known in local mountain bike circles as one of the strongest around. If Hofmann decides to show up for some races this season, who knows what is going to happen.

Jacksonville Training Series

The Jacksonville Training Series continues this evening at Boone Park with a 6:40pm start time. The course features lots of technical turns and quite a few dismounts every lap. With daylight getting shorter every day you will want to bring lights to the races. The series continues through the end of October on Thursday nights. The first week of racing had 45 competitors and promoters are expecting more this week.

Spaghetti 100 Dirt Ride

The Spaghetti 100 in Tallahassee offers a great opportunity to get some miles in on your cyclocross rig before the start of the season on October 13th in Lakeland. The winner gets a jersey and the losers have to listen to Jack Attack Tomassetti wax poetic about the good use of your entry fees to get kids on bikes in the Capital City.

Flyover Spy Pic

Another fly-over spy pic from Miami has appeared via the fabricators of the behemoth, Elito Sculptures. Our favorite part? The planters on the sides of the steps:

Officials Needed

We could use a few more people to help officiate races this year. We are looking for individuals to help with scoring of races, and the Men’s 1/2 and 35+ race in particular since our normal officials plan on putting on the kit and racing this year. If you have some spare time and want to become a certified USA Cycling official let us know!

Update: Thanks to Mike Weimar (Orange State Cycling) and Todd Frobish (Brick City Bicycles) for answering the call. We could still use more!

We have all been there before. (H/T Rick Buning)

We Want Race Promoters!

There is nothing better than hearing from individuals that want to put on a cyclocross races. How can you get on the calendar? Well, we want you! Currently, we have the FLCX series already set for the 2012/13 season, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still put on a race. Just take a look at what Lakeland is doing on October 13th. They have a race and a venue all set-up, it just isn’t part of the point series.

The more cyclocross races we have the more racers are going to take our sport seriously in the Sunshine State. If you are interested in promoting a cyclocross race email us at info@flcx.org and we will tell you what you need to do. All we ask is that you don’t put on a race on a date that already has a cross race! We are working on making the cycling pie bigger, not trying to cannibalize one another.

We have already heard from promoters expressing interest in hosting races in Jacksonville, Ocala and Deland for next season and we are hearing through the grapevine of a weekly series being hosted in Orlando and Gainesville in the coming year as well. Cyclocross is blowing up and you are going to want to get in on the ground level!

Jax Cyclocross Series Tonight

The Jacksonville Training Series kicks off tonight at 630pm at Boone Park. Last year these events routinely had 30+ participants and there were all kinds of great prizes to the victors. The events are sanctioned by USA Cycling and cost only $10.

FLCX.ORG will be there to report the action!  Join us!

For more information see the race flyer linked on our “CX Training Races” tab.

Winter Garden/Clermont Training

Promoting extraordinaire, Jason Guillen, invites cyclocrossers of all skill levels to a new weekly Thursday night training series this Fall in Winter Garden and Clermont. The free events will focus on cyclocross technique and strategy. Each week there will be a training race to cap off the evening. The events alternate between the two venues.

Officials Needed

Did you know that Jason and Courtney Guillen (Gearlink) were responsible for officiating half of the races last year in the FLCX Series? We could always use a few more to help out at the start line. We have gotten word from Keith Creeden of the FRCA (our governing body) that there is a new computer based training program for officials. No longer do you need to drive across the state for a clinic!

Thumbs up from one “official” to another. (Photo: Chicago Tribune)

This could be a great way to involve your friends or family that come to the races anyway. You can get paid, or better yet, a free race entry! How easy is it? Let’s just say that I got my licence five years ago and have officiated quite a few races in that time.

Email us at info@flcx.org to get more information.

We could use you.

Tropical Cyclocross Flyover and Training Race!

We don’t know what Dario and John Voss are feeding the gang in Miami, but they seem to be going crazy for cyclocross! Take a look at the newest picture of the flyover that will appear at this year’s Tropical Cyclocross:

One of a kind flyover in the South East as it features stairs, and not a ramp!

In addition to the new flyover Miami the folks at Tropical Cyclocross are also hosting a training race on October 27th. The race has a Halloween theme and is free to all racers. Better yet? It takes place at the old zoo.

Boston Globe Covers Cyclocross

It isn’t everyday that one of the largest papers in the country dedicates a pullout section to cyclocross. Gotta think that the word is starting to get out. Just wait till all of the roadies and mountain bikers of Florida figure out how much fun we are having. See the story here.

St. Pete CX Practice
In much less sodden conditions than last week, Orange State Cycling held their weekly Tuesday Nite CX practice at Puryear Park. We had a great turnout this week, including women and mountain bikers. Next Tuesday will see the introduction of barriers to the party, so start practicing your dismounts/remounts. We’ll do some starts and some barrier drills, in addition to the hot laps you love so much. Most of the course layouts we use at Puryear feature a lot of tight turns to test your cornering skills, as well as your memory (did I go around this tree or that tree last lap?), so bring some tires with traction!

Picnic Island CX Practice
Sunday, September 30 will see our first adventure at Picnic Island Park in Tampa. Forty minutes of hot laps will begin at about 5.45pm. Be there.

HOLY FLYOVER, BATMAN!

On September 26, 2012 by Super Rookie

We don’t know how they are going to move it, but take a look at what the gang in Miami has made for you at Tropical Cyclocross this November:

It is our understanding that this is the first flyover of its kind in the Southeastern United States. Other flyovers in the region (Savannah, GA and Melbourne, FL) are of the ramp-to-ramp variety and do not feature a stair run-up. We have been told that the flyover is 9ft high which allows for more than enough room to travel under and it appears to be more than wide enough.

Major kudos to the folks at Tropical Cyclocross for stepping up their game and helping to take cyclocross in Florida to the next level!

P.S. Who wants a quarter pipe on the backside and not the planned 16 foot ramp?

Training Series: Winter Garden and Clermont

On September 24, 2012 by Super Rookie

Cyclocross in Florida is blowing up and Jason Guillen doesn’t want you to be left behind (well, maybe on race day). Guillen is organizing a new weekly training series in the Winter Garden / Clermont area. The Thursday night events are free and will focus on a variety of cyclocross skills. Each week they will be capped off with a training race.

What better way to try out cyclocross than a little bit of fun on the best courses around?

Every Thursday we will tell you what we know.

If you have anything you would like to announce or have a cool write-up email it to us at info@flcx.org.

Jacksonville Cyclocross Training Series

Frequent visitors to our site will see that a new tab at the top of our page dubbed, “CX Training Races.” We did this because the folks at Open Road Bicycles in Jacksonville are once again hosting a five week Thursday night training series at Boone Park. The racing starts on September 27th. We were able to race at one of these last year and we were impressed with the turnout (45 people), course and promotion. The 45minute race is scored in three categories, but starts in one large field. The racing starts at 6:40pm, so lights are encouraged.

The flyer can be found here.

Thornton Goes To Nittany Cross

Josh Thornton heads to Pennsylvania for his first UCI race weekend of he 2012/13 season. Thornton emailed us on Wednesday and told us that his goal for the weekend is to come away with a point or two from the race. This will allow him to move up a few rows on the start grid at the major UCI races. Thornton feels that he is stronger than he has been in years, and looks forward to getting the rust off. This means that Josh will need to finish in the top 10 at Nittany Cross.

According to the venerable CrossResults.com Race Predictor Thornton has some work to do to get in the top 10 as he is expected to finish outside the top 30. This is more than likely due to Thornton’s absence from the national scene, rather than his skills. While there are several regional racers registered, the only national level racer registered is the defending National Champion, Jeremy Powers (Rapha/Focus). This means points are definitely possible for Thornton.

Nittany Cross plans to live stream their race here starting at 1:30pm on Saturday.

Tampa Rou-Bay

This Gentleman’s Race is just two weekends away. It will feature a ton of dirt and some asphalt, and most of all good times. It is free and riders are expected to be gentlemen while out on the roadway. That means don’t be a jerk. Visit the Facebook Page for more information, or this little write up from David “Dark Horse” Horst.

Lakeland Goes Official

The Lakeland Cyclocross Short Track Throwdown on October 13th has filed for a permit and an official flyer should be posted soon. The event is going to be fully sanctioned as a race. Meaning that results will be posted and submitted to USA Cycling and can be used for upgrades. This race is not part of the FLCX Point Series, but it is cyclocross and it matters. Why wouldn’t you be there?

Check back here for more information.

Tropical Cyclocross

If you promote a race send us a 250 x 250 pixel banner and we will throw it up there. Dario and John from Miami sent us this new one for Tropical Cyclocross. They also have submitted a new flyer to USA Cycling and we will post it as soon as we get it from the Federation! Only a month and a half to go till we race in the sunshine.

USGP – Louisville

The USGP of Cyclocross is a go. A last minute sponsorship deal with Trek and WD-40 Bike saves the most prestigious cyclocross event in the country. The four weekend series is entering its eighth year of existence and is easily the biggest series on the national cyclocross calendar. Florida has quite a few representatives entered for the Louisville race weekend held over Veteran’s Day Weekend.

Staging order for the USGP is based on order of registration. Race registration opened last Thursday evening at 6pm EST. Within fifteen minutes of registration 35 participants had already signed up in the category 2/3 field. When the dust settled 352 Racing had secured five spots in the first two rows. The field routinely fields and as of this publication already 68 racers have signed up to race.

This is the same venue for the World Championships held in late January.

352 Racing and Jason Guillen were at the 2011 event and are featured at the end of this video.

FLCX.ORG Goes Viral

Our story about USADA showing up to the Tallahassee MTB Race this past weekend has been picked up by a few news outlets and our hits went through the roof. On Monday morning we had 136 unique visits, which was about average. We posted the story on Tuesday and by the end of the day we had 1,949 unique visits to the site and on Wednesday we registered over 1,400 visits. We can’t think of a better way to spread the love of cyclocross in Florida.
